Scholarship Recipients
Saint Andrew's Society of Washington, DC's
Washington Scots Charity & Education Fund Scholarship Program
Congratulations to the recipients of the grants awarded for
the academic year 2008-'09.
- Ms. Cassandra Smith-Christmas has received The Donald Malcolm
MacArthur Scholarship of $2,500, for Americans studying in Scotland,
as well as a St. Andrew’s Scholarship in the amount
of $7,500. Ms. Smith-Christmas, of Stafford, Virginia, will be working
toward a Ph.D. in Celtic Studies at the University of Glasgow. A
champion Scottish fiddler and a linguist with degrees cum laude from
the College of William and Mary in Virginia and the Universiteit Leiden
in The Netherlands, she will be focusing her doctoral work on the preservation
of endangered languages – specifically Scottish Gaelic. Her
long-term aims include an academic post in Linguistics, research and
teaching contributions to Gaelic language preservation programs, and
the creation of a publishing house for children’s books in endangered
languages.
- Ms. Davida L. Connon has been awarded The James & Mary Dawson
Scholarship of $5,000, for Scots coming to the USA for graduate
or post-graduate level study. Originally from Glasgow, Scotland,
she will be pursuing a Master of Laws degree in International Trade
and Development Law at Harvard University’s Law School in Cambridge,
Massachusetts.
- St. Andrew’s Scholarships in the amount of $2,000
each have been awarded to:
- Ms. Abbie N. Sprague (USA), a Ph.D. candidate in Art History at Cambridge
University’s Pembroke College in the United Kingdom researching
the Scottish-led Arts & Crafts Movement and the Tempera Revival.
- Mr. Ryan R. Gladwin (USA), pursuing a Ph.D. in Christian Ethics at the
prestigious Divinity School of the University of Edinburgh.
- St. Andrew’s Scholarships in the amount of $1,250
each have been awarded to:
- Ms. Elizabeth Anne Gulledge (USA), completing her Doctoral dissertation
at the University of St. Andrews. Her research concerns business
management and the preservation of the creative industries in Scotland.
- Mr. Jonathan M. Kanary (USA), an MLitt candidate in Theology, Imagination & the
Arts at the University of St. Andrews in Scotland.
- Two Donald Macleay Scholarships, established to support
the study and teaching of traditional Scottish Music, in the amount of
$500 each have been awarded to Mr. Mac Wade, a promising young piper,
and Mr. Tim Kirkpatrick, Pipe Sergeant of the Society’s Pipe Band,
to sponsor their attendance at the week-long summer camp program at the
North American Academy of Piping and Drumming, in Valle Crucis, NC.
