Scholarship Recipients
Saint Andrew's Society of Washington, DC's
Washington Scots Charity & Education Fund Scholarship Program
Congratulations to the recipients of the grants awarded for
the academic year 2009-10.
- Ms. Cassandra Smith-Christmas has received a St. Andrew’s
Scholarship in the amount of $7,500. Ms. Smith-Christmas, of Stafford, Virginia,
will be continuing her work toward a Ph.D. in Celtic Studies at the University
of Glasgow. A champion Scottish fiddler and a linguist with degrees cum laude
from the College of William and Mary in Virginia and the Universiteit Leiden
in The Netherlands, she will be focusing her doctoral work on the preservation
of endangered languages – specifically Scottish Gaelic. Her long-term
aims include an academic post in Linguistics, research and teaching contributions
to Gaelic language preservation programs, and the creation of a publishing
house for children’s books in endangered languages.
- Mr. Martin McGuinness has been awarded The James & Mary Dawson Scholarship
of $5,000 for Scots coming to the USA for graduate or post-graduate level
study. Hailing from Eaglesham, near Glasgow, Scotland, he will be pursuing
a Master of Laws degree in International Legal Systems at New York University’s
Graduate School of Law in New York City.
- Mr. Thomas McAlpine Gray will receive The John P. McAdams Memorial Scholarship
of $3,500 for Scots or Scottish-Americans pursuing degrees in history
or Scottish culture. Mr. Gray, of Tomatin, Inverness-shire, Scotland,
and a graduate of the University of the Highlands & Islands’ prestigious Gaelic-language
College, Sabhal Mòr Ostaig, is beginning his work toward a Ph.D.
in Highland History with an M.Sc. in Social History from the University
of Glasgow. He will be doing important original research on the social
history of the Scottish Gaels in the 20th century.
- Ms. Diana V. Miller has been awarded The Donald Malcolm MacArthur Scholarship
of $2,500, for Americans studying in Scotland. Ms. Miller originally
from Columbia, Maryland, and a graduate of Carnegie-Mellon University,
is a passionate student of Urban Design and will be working toward a Master
of Science degree at the Edinburgh College of Art.
- A St. Andrew’s Scholarship in the amount of $2,000 has been awarded
to Ms. Abbie N. Sprague, formerly of the National Gallery of Art in Washington,
DC, now a Ph.D. candidate in Art History at Cambridge University’s Pembroke
College in the United Kingdom who is researching the Scottish-led Arts & Crafts
Movement and the 19th century Tempera Revival.
St. Andrew’s Scholarships in the amount of $1,000 each have been awarded
to:
- Ms. Elizabeth Anne Gulledge (Raleigh, NC), completing her Doctoral dissertation
at the University of St. Andrews. Her research concerns business management
and the preservation of the creative industries in Scotland.
- Ms. Aurelie Marie Beatley (Kensington, MD), an MLitt candidate in Celtic
Civilizations at the University of Glasgow in Scotland.
