Kirkin' o' the Tartan
Saturday, April 21, 2007
This is an extraordinary event in the life of the Metropolitan
Washington DC Scottish Community. The Kirkin’ takes
place April 21st this year at the Washington National Cathedral
located the upper part NW Washington DC near the Maryland
line. Pipes & Drums, in full regalia, step off at 3:30
PM sharp.
The Washington St. Andrew’s Society has
conducted the Kirkin Service at the National Cathedral,
uninterrupted, since 1952 when it was moved there from several
other churches in the DC area. The massed Pipes, Drums, & Colors
will lead the Tartan Bearers & Society Members into
the Cathedral Nave at precisely 4:00 PM for the start of
the service.
Upon conclusion of the remarks by the Chaplain,
the entire massed Pipes & Drums march in again to the
High Alter with Society Members for the “Blessing
of the Tartans”, Remembrance of Departed Comrades,
and Benediction. Additionally, attendees are included in
viewing an open air performance of the Pipes, Drums, and
Dancers of the Society on the south side of the Cathedral
immediately after the service. This is an exciting Spring
time experience in NW Washington DC.
RESERVED SEATING in
the National Cathedral is available for this service.
Reservations are free to Members and Guests and they
may be obtained, preferably, via e-mail, and by phone, from
the Society’s

titled simply KIRKIN2007. Also via 202-345-0843 or 202-962-2156
and leave a short specific message. General public seating
is also available as always.
When requesting reservations,
please indicate seating preference either in the Nave
(main body of the building) or in the Great Choir. Tickets
WILL still be REQUIRED for Great Choir and available at
the usual table. Great Choir availability is first come
first served only and limited. No children in the Choir
please. Every sound they make is amplified through the whole
building. Attendees seated in the Great Choir must be in
place by 3:45 PM when the High Alter is readied for the
service.. Quiet is requested in that area..
NO NAVE TICKETS this year, just reservations..
We are trying to eliminate the line caused by the ticket
issue and persistent late arrivals. Requested reservations
will be on a list held by the kilted ushers in reserved
section. All reserved seats will have to be released
10 minutes prior to service.
Society Members are requested
to join us for the procession into the Cathedral. Formation
will be on the South Drive at exactly 3:30 PM and will
step off with the Pipes & Drums at 3:45 sharp. Those
in the procession will have special seating. Prospective
Members are invited to join the procession. Reservations
are required for family members and our guests in designated
areas directly behind the Society/processional reserved
area.
For Society Members and guests there will be a ticketed
reception, for nominal charge, following this performance.
Please contact President Doug Brooks, David Levite, or
Dave McKenzie for information as to the reception and
invitation. Members are encouraged to attend and meet new
members.

which will be outstanding, and the Spring flowers abundant!
